What Are Smart Money Concepts?

Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is a trading methodology built on understanding how institutional players โ€” banks, hedge funds, central banks, and market makers โ€” engineer price to fill their orders.

Core Truth: Retail traders lose because they trade patterns designed to trap them. SMC teaches you to read the trap and trade with the institution, not against it.

Who Is "Smart Money"?

PlayerRole
Central BanksMove currency via policy decisions
Tier-1 Banks (JPMorgan, Goldman)Execute massive institutional orders
Hedge FundsFollow institutional flow
Retail TradersProvide the liquidity institutions need

The ICT Power of 3 (AMD Model)

Every trading session follows a 3-phase cycle:

  • Accumulation (A) โ€” Institutions quietly build positions during consolidation (usually the Asian session)
  • Manipulation (M) โ€” Price is pushed in the opposite direction to grab retail stops and trigger breakout traders
  • Distribution (D) โ€” Price moves in the true direction as institutions fill their orders

Real Trade Example โ€” EUR/USD London Session

Asian Range: 1.0820 โ€“ 1.0845 (consolidation) Manipulation: Price spikes DOWN to 1.0808 โ†’ triggers retail sell stops True Move: Price reverses and rallies to 1.0892 during London open Entry: 1.0815 (after manipulation wick closes back inside range) Stop Loss: 1.0800 (below manipulation low) Target: 1.0880 (buy-side liquidity above Asian high) R:R = 1:4.3

Why Retail Traders Lose

  • They buy breakouts โ†’ institutions sell INTO the breakout
  • They place stops at obvious levels โ†’ institutions sweep those exact levels first
  • They use indicators โ†’ indicators lag and are built on retail logic

The SMC Edge

Once you understand the AMD cycle, you stop being the liquidity. You wait for the manipulation phase, confirm the reversal, and enter with institutions during distribution.

Mindset Shift: Every "stop hunt" or "false breakout" you used to curse is now your entry signal. The manipulation IS the setup.

Homework

  • On EUR/USD 1H chart, identify the last 5 Asian sessions
  • Mark the Asian range high and low on each
  • Note: did price sweep one side before reversing during London? That sweep = the manipulation phase
